Art in the Airport - Recycled Couture

I love love love the fact that art can be found in the most unlikely places, like the Atlanta airport.  Amazing displays of recycled couture are all over the terminal.  I have to share this amazing art with you.

Made from recycled tires and inner tubes:

For those of you who want to be extra Cautious.....why not make your next party dress out of caution tape?
Photobucket

Have you heard the phrase .."That dress she wore is a crime.."?...well...if so, this one literally is made from recycled crime scene tape - taking CSI to a whole new level....

 Photobucket

Before you throw out those old VCR and cassette tapes, why not make a faux fur statement with this coat? Photobucket

or maybe your convert your "convertable" car into this...made from electrical wire and the vinyl from a convertable....

Photobucket
Coke...it's the "real" thing... an amazing use of soda cans to create this dress:  (Say Hi Mariah....)Photobucket

and of course no style is complete without the matching shoes and handbag....

Eco Heidi - I immediately thought of you!

and I couldn't agree more:  Waste does not exist - only wasted resources and wasted opportunties....

And if you're a bag lady......well...wearing this you might be a stylish bag lady...

And don't forget to wear your matching hat!...

Maybe I'll have to shop at Target more???

Have I give you something to think about the next time you decide to throw something out? I guess craft hording can be good and with a little imagination, you can make some really cool couture.....

Embrace who you really are! Spellbinders Blog Frenzy and debut of Positively ME dies by Julianna Hudgins

I'm so honored to be asked by Julianna to be part of the debut of her new dies with Spellbinder's.

Embrace who you REALLY are!  Really no one can be you, or copy you, better than YOU!  A saying I've heard over and over again from Jewels is "Live Your Truth" or as I put it "Embrace who you really are".  We all have strengths and weaknesses, we all have different talents and abilities, but that doesn't change our value as a person.  And that's what makes us all interesting and individual!

The "Positively ME" collection of Spellbinders dies by Julianna Hudgins celebrates women, empowerment, and strength.  I LOVE Jewels dies and am thrilled to have the opportunity to be a part of the Spellbinders Blog Frenzy and to use these dies more in future projects.

For my project, I knew I wanted to make an art journal, something I could write my daily thoughts, ideas, sketches, just any sort of jibberish that came to mind at any given moment.  I also happen to love dress forms.  (My mom has one that was my grandmothers and I simply love it's shape and style)

So naturally I  chose the Jewels Goddess small -  Sku Name LF-013 Jewel Goddess

Here's what you'll need:

  • Spellbinders Die - Jewel Goddess Small, Heart Large and Heart Small Sku Name LF-013 Jewel Goddess
  • Spellbinders Die - Kite  Sku Name S5-097 Jewel Treasures
  • Composition Notebook
  • Decorative paper (one for the background, one for the dressform and one for the dress)
  • Cardstock in either black or brown
  • Decorative trims - I love beaded eyelash trims
  • Paper doily
  • Sequin ribbon
  • Fabric scraps
  • Collage Pauge
  • Stencils of choice
  • Stickles glitter glue - silver or color of choice
  • Permanent Marker - black fine tip
  • Distress inks in coordinating colors
  • Objects to add textures such as bubble wrap, bottle caps etc
  • Sanding block
  • scissors
  • paintbrush
  • Aleene's Original Tacky Glue

Decoupage background paper to the journal and let dry

Lay stencil on background and apply ink and paint to give visual interest and texture to your background
You can also add ink to bubble wrap and stamp on cover to create various interesting patterns
Go with the flow - you can't mess up

Cut one small goddess shape from background paper as you see below
and one small goddess shape from the "dress" paper
Cut a large heart and a small heart from the same paper as the dress form with the print facing you.
create an additional set of hearts with the back of the paper facing you.
Cut a kite from a black or brown piece of card stock

Ink the edges of the dress form

Cut the bottom "V" from the kite and invert  to create dress form stand.

Using the finished picture as a guide, arrange pieces
on journal.  (1 large heart and 1 small heart combine to make a
butterfly wing which is placed behind the dress form towards the top.)
Once arranged
Decoupage wings, dress form and base to the front of the journal and let dry

Cut the top of the dress into scallop shapes about 1" from the top
and trim off the bottom to the length desired
Glue trim to backside as shown
Glue pieces of paper doily lace to top of bodice on back side

Glue the dress to front of dress form

Roll various scraps of fabric up to simulate vintage flowers and
glue on the front.
Apply sequin trims with glue on bodice and bottom of dress

Here's a little close up

Add additional doodles and lines with black marker to give visual interest.

Write your words with marker
Highlight desired areas with Stickles and let dry.

Now it's time to EMBRACE WHO YOU REALLY ARE!!!

We're Packin' for England! Mixed Media book

Wow! Things are really flyin' in the studio.  We're off to England in just two days to film my next book in the series "Mixed Media Inspirations".  I have to say that this was one of the HARDEST books I've ever put together.  Why?  Well......there's just so much you can do, so many awesome products you can work with, so much fun treasure hunting for meaningful found objects, so many techniques and only so much space in a book! I literally could have gone wild!  But, I guess that leaves ideas for another book right?

The BESTest part of mixed media art is that anyone...and I mean ANYONE can do it! I've tried to fill this book full of easy techniques that result in projects that look fabulous and like you've been doing this forever.  I know you'll enjoy the process as much as the result!!...so...

here's a little sneaky peaky at a few of the snippits in the book....

Back to packin!

Don't throw out those scraps - Make Scrappy Fabric Beads!

Fabulous scrap fabric beads are so easy to make.

Working on the projects for my Mixed Media Inspirations book has left me with all sorts of bits and pieces of scrap material.  We all know that no craft hoarder ever throws anything away!!

These are great for all those tiny bits and pieces of fabric you might have laying around from past projects.  Why not give them new life?

It's so easy - here's what you'll need

Fabric Scraps
Scraps of embroidery floss or other fibers
plastic tubing
Aleene's Original Tacky glue
Eye pins

Cut the plastic tubing into various length.
wrap with fabric scraps and glue ends to secure
Tie fibers around beads to accent
Thread onto headpins and loop.

I have no idea exactly what these will become - but they were loads of fun to make!

What will you do with your scrap fabrics?
Please share your ideas via a comments.

The not so redneck drinking glasses - How to etch glass

The major part of the hunting season is over, winter is upon us and for me, cooler temperatures mean it's time to get warm and fuzzy.  On a cold winter day, nothing is better than a good bowl of Big D's chili and a little - not so redneck table decor.

In my Warm and Fuzzy episode, I shared how to etch a moose design onto a drinking glass for a lodgy and okay..sorta redneck crafts design.  It's a great technique that can be applied to any design.

Enjoy!
